The Space Gallery, opening with the current exhibition, chooses to bring to the city an additional, intriguing and complex relationship – that between art and craftsmanship.
Art and craftsmanship are fused into coexistence in this exhibition, which presents the work of the artists and craftsmen and women of the gallery, members of the Western Galilee Now association. They work in a variety of materials, and represent different approaches to art and craftsmanship.
All of them are creative artists, who live and breathe their artistic work, delving deep and exploring new directions in their journey.
The creative process, which they share, is one of synthesis, whose significance is always cumulative and greater than the sum of its parts
Is craftsmanship an essential component of the creative process?
Is the reverse also true?
Is there an inherent clash between the adventurous and unpredictable nature of the artist’s work and the carefully devised and meticulous process of the craftsman?
Why should Fabergé eggs forever mark the peak of craftsmanship, whereas plates designed by Picasso are as highly regarded (or are they?) as his graphic artworks?
Craftsmanship represents power and freedom, but can also become frozen in tradition and technique. And then there’s art… temperamental, elusive, forever seeking to redefine itself and often caught up in its inner contradictions.
